Legislative Quick Update - week 2

January 14, 2008

Just a quick update. As many of you know the Governor recommended that state employees get a 3% across the board raise at his 2008 'State of the State' address. This is the same as school service personnel but differs from class room teachers who would get an additional $400, about another 1%. The AFSCME Legislative team will be talking to the House and Senate leadership as well as the Governor's office again to improve the proposed increase. Your help by contacting Delegates and Senators in your county and attending our February 18 Lobby Day at the Capitol will be a big step and increase our chances of success.

Finally, our increment bill (HB 2995) was introduced on the first day of the session, and referred only to House Finance Committee. AFSCME takes sole ownership of this bill. We challenge state employees to contact any of the co-sponsors (Delegates Caputo, Duke, Fleischauer, Staggers, Manchin, Marshall, Martin, Perdue, Perry, Spencer and Hutchins) and ask them if any other organization, member or staff, ever contacted them about sponsoring the bill. The answer is No. Also we encourage all our members to contact these Delegates and thank them for sponsoring this bill which doubles the amount of increment pay state employees would receive every year.

Additional Legislative Session updates will be posted here as more of our bills get introduces and Legislative Committees begin to take action.
